Despite many rounds of negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis under the auspices of several parties, including the United States, the two sides have failed to reach a resolution of the conflict. Meanwhile, Israel, tolerated by the international community, continues to expand its settlements on the West Bank and in East Jerusalem while denying Palestinians their inalienable rights, such as the right of return and the rights to national independence, sovereignty, and self-determination.
Operation Protective Edge is not the first war Israel has waged on Gaza. Israel had previously launched two similar operations: Operation Cast Lead (2008) and Operation Pillar of Cloud (2012). No matter what name a Hamas-Israeli war was given or what reasons were given for it, it has always been the civilians of Gaza who have paid the price.
Before 1967, the Green Line – established in the 1949 Armistice Agreements – was in fact the eastern border of Israel. Back then, Israel’s territory encompassed 78 percent of the land of the pre-1948 British Mandate for Palestine. However, neither Israel nor its neighbouring Arab states had ever recognized the borders of this territory as a formal state border, although most of the international community did in fact consider the Green Line as such.
